Virginia Undergraduate
Symposium in Classics

The Virginia Undergraduate Symposium in Classics (VURSIC) is a commonwealth-wide symposium featuring the work of undergraduates on the Greco-Roman world. Undergraduates will present original research on all aspects of identity in antiquity. Presenters hail from many institutions across the Commonwealth. Past participants have come from Randolph–Macon College, University of Mary Washington, University of Richmond, the University of Virginia, and The College of William & Mary. The location of the symposium rotates each year and each symposium is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Each symposium features 6-8 undergraduate presentations and 1 keynote lecture. The keynote lecturers for the symposium are chosen from the many outstanding Classics faculties in the Commonwealth.  Past keynotes include:

2018: Dr. Angela Pitts (University of Mary Washington), "The Iliad and the Human Cost of War"
2017: Dr. John Camp (Randolph-Macon College), "Recent Excavations in the Athenian Agora"
2016: Drs. Andrew and Trudy Harrington Becker (Virginia Tech), "All Roads Lead from Rome: Roman Literature and Art in Renaissance Italy (Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Botticelli)"
2015: Dr. John Miller (University of Virginia), "Ovid's Nymphs and the Question of Identity"
2014: Dr. Vassiliki Panoussi (College of William and Mary), "Mourning becomes Orpheus? Poetry and Women's Rituals in Ovid's Metamorphoses 10 and 11"
